THE ABANDONED FACTORY IN BELGIUM
‘Inofer Productions’ in Mechelen was a press shop for non-ferrous metals. The company went bankrupt at the end of 2013.
Originally the building belonged to ‘Malterie Vandermolen’ who built this malting plant in 1885. The buildings still contain the former malt towers. The building was designed by Antwerp architect Georges Matthyssens. In 1963 the buildings were sold to Inofer by rubber factory ‘Le Caoutchouc Récupéré’ the owner of the old malting plant.
Inofer was specialized in forging knives and making gas taps. The company was also active in neighboring countries, but got into financial difficulties in 2010. The company employed 119 workers, all of them were fired by the curator in the first instance. Luckily a restart was made, with 90 employees. Twenty-nine people then lost their jobs. But the restart could not prevent a bankruptcy in 2013.
In March 2015, four teenagers made two forklift trucks in the abandoned ‘Inofer Productions’ factory. When a roof collapsed, an 11 and an 18 year old died. I visited the factory in 2019.
