THE ABANDONED SANATORIUM IN GEORGIA
Architects A. Alex-Meskhishvili and L. Janelidze built this ‘Sanatorium Imereti’ in 1961. Tskaltubo became the important spa-resort during the Soviet times. A total of 23 large holiday hotels, sanatoriums and their auxiliary buildings were built during this period.
It took 11 years to finish this sanatorium. The buildings capacity was 305 beds. It is distinguished by its high architectural and artistic value and an example of Stalinist architecture style. The building is surrounded by pines, palm trees and many bushes. At one end there is a rotunda that housed a concert room with a vaulted ceiling and an internal circle of narrow columns.
Since 1993 ‘Imereti’ is devoted to housing families, displaced from their homes by ethnic conflict in Abkhazia. In 2014 this old sanatorium housed 83 IDPs, or Internal dislocated persons. Sadly ‘Sanatorium Imereti’ is in a bad state. The balconies, verandas, openings and windows of the façade are in very poor condition.
