THE ABANDONED SCHOOL IN POLAND
‘Audytorium Wydziału Chemii’ or, the auditorium of the Faculty of Chemistry was built in post-war Poland. It is a real pearl of the modernist architecture of the Polish People’s Republic. The building was built in 1970. The auditorium has been closed since 2007.
The auditorium of the University of Wroclaw was designed as part of a space development competition, which was won by the architects Krystyna and Marian Barscy. The two-story building is very well preserved. Its interior contains countless architectural details like the arrangement of light bulbs, radiator covers, door handles and hooks in the cloakroom. It reflects the character and uniqueness of this place even years after its closing. The auditorium has two rooms located in the upper floor, intended for 238 and 121 students.
Unfortunately the facility was closed due to high maintenance costs and failure to adapt to the modern standard. For example, to heat the rooms with industrial electric blowers. Funds are raised for its renewal. In 2012, the auditorium was entered in the register of monuments, as one of the few post-war objects. I visited the ‘Audytorium Wydziału Chemii’ in 2019.
